No matter what model you choose from your list of residual income business opportunities, there is one rule of business which is a certainty: it’s easier and cheaper to keep a client than to get a new one. Once you’ve gained a new customer and made a sale, deliver on the goods. Depending on what you’re currently offering, there’s a good chance you can come up with other solutions to similar wants and needs for your customer. For a dog sitting business, you could offer obedience training, home-made organic treats, grooming and even season clothing and accessories. A busy dog owner would love the benefits of such products and services. You’re saving them the time of driving to the store or going to a training program during the few free hours they have.

Follow up.

Some business owners hate to call a customer out of fear there might be a problem. Instead, look at a problem as your opportunity to show that you really do know your stuff by fixing it. If the customer didn’t call you about the problem chances are they weren’t going to return to you or refer anyone else to your business. Even worse, the story of their dissatisfaction might have started spreading. Turn that story into a tale of amazing service as they tell others how responsive you are and how they’re going to always use you from now on.

Offer a “continuity program”.

While it sometimes requires creative thinking, any business has the potential for a so-called continuity program which brings in regular income to the customers you’ve already worked so hard to get. Any residual income business opportunities are made better through the creation of a premium program which locks your customer into using you. For a massage therapy practice, you could offer a membership program which offers special hours only available to members. Your dog sitting business could handle monthly insect repellent applications and yearly pet visits. Again, it may take some thought, but there’s always something you can do to create a continuity program that your customers will want to be a part of.

Encourage testimonials.

Your website and sales materials should always include testimonials and references from happy customers. In marketing circles this is known as social proof and it’s pure magic. How does this help you keep existing customers? First, it shows other customers how many other happy clients you have. Second it reminds them of their own satisfaction with your business.

Building any business can take its share of hard work and effort. Why make things harder for yourself but not working to keep the customers you already have? Look to what you already have to build and maintain and strong foundation of success.
