O2’s study showed that out of the 500 SMEs (small and medium enterprises) interviewed, the percentage actively using Twitter is over 17% – with about a quarter of that segment being new members over the past few weeks.

It would seem that one reason for this sudden explosion in Twitter Marketing would be the current economic client, forcing smaller businesses to look for more cost effective marketing, recruitment outlets and customer service. And it seems that Twitter is starting to work for them.

From the research, about 28% of those questioned stated that Twitter helped them to stay in touch with similar-sized businesses, which helped to boast their confidence. And most strikingly and importantly, nearly one third of the surveyed estimated that Twitter Marketing had saved them around £1,000… and 1 in 10 claiming to have saved up to £5,000 in recruitment or marketing expenses.

Over two in five said they were using Twitter to make money/save money more than Facebook or LinkedIn.

A further data breakdown shows that nearly three quarters of the companies surveyed recognised Twitter’s cost-saving and marketing advantages, 42% saw the medium to be useful as a means of staying in contact with customers and suppliers, and 34% felt they could use it monitor their competitors.
The simplicity of Twitter is a genuine opportunity for small and medium enterprises and businesses to raise their profiles and increase efficiency.
